Our Founders

The co-founders of Faith Forward are Karla Rose Hanson and the Rev. Cody Schuler.

Karla has worked as a communications professional for 20+ years and advocates for social justice issues. She co-founded the North Dakota Coalition for Privacy in Health Care and belongs to an ELCA church in Fargo.

Cody is an ordained United Methodist pastor and church planter, serving The Gathering in Fargo. He also coordinates the C.A.R.E.S. project (Coordinated Assessment Referral and Evaluation System) for the Fargo-Moorhead Coalition for Homeless Persons.

Our Advisory Board

An advisory board has been formed for this initial pilot phase of Faith Forward. Our advisors are Rev. Dr. Kevin Cassiday-Maloney of First Congregational UCC in Fargo, Rev. Gretchen Deeg of the United Church of Christ in Bismarck, and Pastors Kathy Fick and Chad Brucklacher of UND Christus Rex Lutheran Campus Center in Grand Forks.

Our Purpose

Faith Forward Network works to improve social justice in North Dakota by mobilizing faith leaders and faithful citizens.

While many of us are involved with compassion ministries, we also see a need to address the causes of social justice issues through policy changes and community organizing.

We are called by our religious principles to improve creation care (environmental justice), economic justice, human trafficking, and human rights in our state.

Our interfaith and ecumenical network connects social justice-minded clergy, lay leaders and citizens with each other; facilitates education and advocacy opportunities; and amplifies faith voices on social justice issues.

Faith Forward is a pilot project to evaluate the need for faith-based mobilizing on social justice issues in North Dakota. While the vision is to be inclusive of all faiths and all communities across the entire state, the initial work will focus on the faith communities in Grand Forks, Fargo and Bismarck.

Our Funding

Faith Forward is funded by a Community Innovation Grant from the Bush Foundation, in partnership with the Consensus Council. Our fiscal agent is the Northern Plains Conference of the United Church of Christ.

Donations to sustain Faith Forward long-term are welcome.
